R rating - RARE - A great addition to any collection - Authenticated by NGC and graded AU58+ with the + annotating that the condition is at the highest possible AU grade, bordering Mint State status

Australia, Victoria (1837-1901), gold Half-Sovereign, 1897-S, Sydney Mint, crowned, veiled bust left, T.B. initials below truncation for engraver Thomas Brock, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA· DEI· GRA· BRITT· REGINA· FID· DEF· IND· IMP·, with 134 denticle obverse where upright of D in DEF and I of IND point to a gap between the border teeth, rev. St George and dragon right, date in exergue, tiny letter S on groundline (Hill 503A R; Bull EGC 1650 R; S.3881). Toned, has been slabbed and graded by PCGS as AU58+, only 19x finer examples graded, rare.

We note as of May 2025 that NGC have graded 54x examples, of which only 10x are finer; PCGS have graded 71x, of which only 9x are finer.

Calendar year mintage not known.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse as "Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."
