*RARE* 1872-S Queen Victoria Half Sovereign 22ct Gold Shieldback Coin-Mint Error
1872 Queen Victoria young/bun head Half Sovereign 22ct Gold Shieldback Bullion Coin - Royal Mint (Sydney Mint)
Marsh guide reference: 461, scarce rarity rating, low existing numbers known, value £900 IAW 2024 MARSH/ HILL guide
Distinguishing feature: Queen Victoria’s nose points towards the T in the legend (photo shows difference, this rotation of the busy only occurred in this year, and in a select few half sovereigns. Truly unique.
This particular year coin is very hard to find for sale online due to smaller amount minted at the Sydney Mint in 1872, especially with variations such as this and is increasingly sought after by collectors. This is the only example I could find for sale currently at the time of writing.
Rated Scarce in SPINKS/ MARSH coin guide = valued in 2024 in the sovereign series catalog (Hill & Marsh) at £900
Condition as shown in photographs, bought at auction as GF, nice features. Obverse is GVF possibly cleaned. Please feel free to ask for any further photographs if you are interested.
