1817 Gold Half Sovereign - King George III - First Modern Release + FREE Silver Valcambi bar
1817 Gold Half Sovereign - King George III - First Modern Release + FREE Silver Valcambi bar
In 1817, The Half Sovereign was revived as part of the great coinage reform that followed the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Although the full sovereign relation to this half sovereign is only about half the size of the original sovereign, the new coin more than matched the beauty of its predecessor. The traditional heraldic reverse was abandoned in favour of St George and the dragon by the Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci - a numismatic classic that has become synonymous with The Half Sovereign and endures to the present day. The general valuation applied to the 1817 sovereign is £2000 as of 2024 (Marsh/Hill Sovereign Series Guide) however this is based on good condition. This sovereign is ex jewellery/ cleaned with a small amount of rim damage photographed (above George head), in otherwise fine condition IAW grading criteria and thus is reflected in the price, being the cheapest of its kind found anywhere online at the time of writing. Features of the coin are all still legible. An ideal gap filler for collectors and numismatists alike, this coin also comes with a complimentary 1g Valcambi silver bar as do all orders over £100 here at TheGoldSovereign. |
